Answers to Name That Tune

Are ya ready Auntie M?
Uh huh.
Septembermom?
Yeah.
Ken?
Okay.
Well all right, Quangsters, let's go!

I couldn't resist.

1. Ballroom Blitz by Sweet from 1973. The song starts out:
"Are ya ready Steve?
Uh huh.
Andy?
Yeah.
Mick?
Okay.
Well all right, fellas, let's go!"

And then the head banging begins.

2. Love is the Drug by Roxy Music from 1975.
"Oh, oh, can't you see? Love is the drug for me."

3. Sunshine Superman by Donovan from 1966.
This was correctly guessed by Ken, and I assume S. Superman. Nice job, fellas.

4. Shining Star by Earth, Wind and Fire from 1975.
"You're a shining star, no matter who you are. Shining bright to see what you can truly be."

5. Straight On by Heart from 1978.
Ann Wilson. The only woman on the earth who can truly sing according to Computer Geek.

6. Aquarius by The Fifth Dimension from 1969.
"When the moon is in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars. Then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars."  Must not have happened yet. Correctly guessed by Auntie M. Yay!

7. Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver from 1971.
Correctly guessed by septembermom and Auntie M. Good job! Did you know this is now the theme song for West Virginia University and has been played at every home football game since 1972?  One of the highlights of my life was seeing John Denver sing Calypso in concert. Majestic. We miss us some Henry Deutschendorf. (And I will have you know I spelled that correctly on the first try.)

There's some phone that has song identification software, it might be the iPhone I am not sure..

  2. Adam: Like if you play the tune into the receiver it will tell you what it is?

  3. Hi Randi

I'll have to check out Ann Wilson.

I loved the Ballroom Blitz by Sweet but I didn't recall the conversation. They were a very, very good group and their flip sides were always a special contrast.

    Brings back memories.

    Thanks.

Yeah I can't remember who the provider is, I saw the commercial & thought it looked really cool. My theory though is that what people are paying for now, will be "free" in a couple years time. So thank you all iPhone subcribers for subsidizing my free stuff down the road. Just like how cars didn't used to have CD players, cruise control or whatever & now it is all standard features.

Heck I am just glad I can go download new Dr. Who's 2 weeks before they come on in America (which is really idiotic that the BBC can't put them out the SAME day here when I can go read all the spoiler pages, basically know the plot but have to wait 2 weeks for them to come on in BBC America).

    God Bless,
    Adam

  5. Just as I thought; only the last two are familiar to me. I recall that your sweet mom was a John Denver fan. She sent me a
t-shirt, from one of his concerts (?). I heard him sing yesterday and thought of her.

  6. Ken: A Sweet fan! I loved Ballroom Blitz too. You almost can't help dancing to it. Yes, you will have to check out Ann Wilson from Heart. Every time Computer Geek hears a woman singing he says,"She's no Ann."

Adam: I used to work in a cell phone store and for a computer company and at both places I had customers complaining that they had to pay for what new customers now get for free. I would just tell them that they were cool long before others even knew what cool was.
I'll check out your Dr. Who link on FB.

Auntie M: Now that my mom and John Denver are both living in the same place (not W. Va., that was only "almost" Heaven) I hope she gets to chat with him in person and that he sings for her every night. I took her to see him in concert twice. Both times were amazing.

  7. Sorry, but I have to blather a bit ‘bout Ann. Only slightly, though. I just can’t help myself. You see, there were many famous female pop/rock singers from my youth: Carpenter, Ronstadt, Olivia, Nicks, later Benatar, but none of them could do what Ann Wilson could: belt out hard rock and love songs with a ballsy, angsty, edgy, lusty, fiery, soulful purpose that approached a Robert Plant or Rod Stewart at their best. OK, so she was from my hometown, but my provincial proclivities have nothing to do with this. Comparing her to today’s mega-programmed female performer du jour is like comparing Dom Perignon to flat soda. Ann never had to cavort around with overly-choreographed dancers clad in skimpy costumes and lip-synch to crappy corp-pop to get attention, she just used her voice and her heart (no pun intended) to capture the audience.
Yes, the Sisters Wilson fell into the big-hair ‘n’ spandex trap in the mid-eighties to resurrect their careers, but they are still defined by their first three albums, a collection of Zeppelin/Elton John influenced ballads and rockers that still ring true. Listen to “Dreamboat Annie”, “Dog and Butterfly”, and “Love Alive”, followed by “Barracuda”, “Cook with Fire” and their magnum opus, “Mistral Wind”, to appreciate Ann’s vocal pyrotechnics. And if you must, catch their early MTV power-ballads, “Alone” and “These Dreams”, just to enjoy their spandex era.

I guess I am just a firm believer in "technological trickle down". My first DVD player cost me over $100, now I can get one for less than $25, blu ray players are headed the same way, started out about $200+ now they are around $75. By Christmas they'll be $50 or less.

My thought, why pay for it? Let someone else invest in it, get the beta version, so by trial & error they are basically paying for my good tech.

The Dr. Who video I posted is a song someone matched up with clips from season 5, though I think if you go on Youtube there is a channel called "WhoTube" which has actual trailers, clips & interviews. Now I am just counting down the days till the Christmas episode (someone already leaked a script & now they are trying to re-write it before they film it, which is supposed to be relatively soon).

Tell Julie happy birthday, she's a very cute little girl. Though no one is as cute as my Smoke-ums :)

    God Bless,
    Adam

  10. I too saw John Denver sing Calypso - and a bunch of my other favorites - not long before he died. Miss him!
My favorite Sweet song was Big Apple Waltz.

Here's the link for "WhoTube", kinda a lot of videos so you have to scroll around. But has a lot of episode trailers, interview clips, etc.

You won't be paid for it, but at least you'll know that you have contributed intelligence to the universe...
